High failure rate

Posted by HuiHui on 3:42 PM
Had been sourcing some recipes online lately and experiencing high failure rate. These are a few new recipes which I experimented for the past 2 weeks:

Experiment #1: Roast pork belly ( http://lilyng2000.blogspot.com/2005/10/roast-belly-pork.html )
Verdict: Couldn’t get crispy rind even though I set the oven temperature to the max of 250C. It turned out more like a steak instead.

Experiment #2: Siew Mai (http://lilyng2000.blogspot.com/2005/07/siew-mai.html )
Verdict: Turned out pretty well; but haven’t reached the “ummmpph!!!” state yet. Have no idea how to improve the taste further although texture wise, MH suggested more water chestnut.

Experiment #3: Pandan custard agar agar ( http://roseskitchen.wordpress.com/2007/01/28/pandan-custard-agar-agar/ )
Verdict: 230g of sugar is way too sweet! It could do with more coconut milk (couldn’t resist santan anytime) and some rainbow coloring.

Experiment #4: Beancurd Salt Fish Soup ( http://kuali.com/recipes/viewrecipe.asp?r=659 )
Verdict: Not bad. Special taste. Recommended to try when you’re tired of the usual soup.

Experiment #5: Braised pork belly with black mushroom – “Homemade” recipe in desperate act of trying to vanish the sample of the failed experiment #1.
Verdict: Yummy, especially when eaten with porridge. :D

Bin list:
1)Repeat experiment #3
2)Almond chews slice
3)Lasagna (A long overdue experiment. Shredded cheddar cheese and instant lasagna sheets had been sitting in the fridge for > 3 months. This experiment failed to take off after MH was diagnosed with oily liver during his routine medical check up, blamed on the overdose of my cheese cake. :p)

The rate of experiment depends solely on the rate of the sample depleting from the fridge, either to the rubbish bin or MH’s tummy. MH wasn’t a “cooking friendly person” unlike my younger brother, Yan. Yan can wipe off anything, even if the experiment was a total disaster. Of course, being a state athletic Yan doesn’t have to worry about the calorie! But neither do MH. He’s just being picky and uncooperative.
